This sculpture, “COMBAT DIVER”, depicts a Combat Diver as he emerges near a riverbank with his C-8 assault rifle at the ready. To reinforce the visual clues to this setting, there are several Water Lilly pars on the surface just to his front. The scuba equipment shown is out-of-date; modern “rebreather” equipment eliminates the trail of air bubbles rising to the surface which betray the presence of an underwater diver. Each Canadian Combat Engineer Regiment has a team of scuba divers for special missions, such as: underwater obstacle clearance of setting out obstacles; reconnaissance sorties to inspect hostile defences on river banks; assess nearby terrain as it might affect vehicle crossing and exits; river fording areas, etc. This sculpture was unveiled in March 2013 by the Royal Military College of Canada, and is dedicated to current and past Canadian Combat Engineer divers.
