Cross of Sacrifice

Kingston, Ontario
Type
Other

The Cross of Sacrifice was erected in 1925 and commissioned by the Kingston Chapter of Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire. It features an elongated cross with the shaft and crossarm octagonal in section. A bronze longsword, blade down, is affixed to the front of the cross and it is mounted on an octagonal base.

Originally erected in memory of the soldiers from Kingston who gave their lives in the First World War, it now serves as a symbol of contribution and sacrifice for all of Kingston's fallen men and women and is the home for Kingston's Remembrance Day ceremonies each November 11.

In the 1950s, the Princess of Wales' Own Regiment became stewards of the monument. It is now part of the city's civic collection of artifacts, art and public memorials, making the stewardship of the monument a collaborative effort.
