The Rocks of Honour are a tribute to all the service men and women from Wallaceburg, Walpole Island, Mitchells Bay, Port Lambton, Sombra and Wilksport who served and returned from the First and Second World Wars. It was dedicated in June of 2005 and was the efforts of a small group of a dedicated individuals.
In 2000, a young lad asked why his grandfather's name, who served in the Second World War, was not on the cenotaph. He said that his grandfather served Canada in war and was willing to pay with his life… his name should be someplace. This was the basis for the Rocks of Honour Project. Two local historians, Alan Mann and Gert McClure, took on the mammoth task of creating the Rocks of Honour in 2002. After years of research, 1,831 names from the Second World War and 577 names from the First World War were collected for the monument.
Funding was provided through The Ontario Trillium Foundation, the Chatham-Kent Partnership fund and purchasing of walking stones on the Walk of Gratitude.
