In 1858, Judge Malloch built a magnificent home on Drummond Street West in Perth which he named Victoria Hall. The Judge’s family lived in the home until the 1870s, after which it remained vacant for almost fifty years, becoming known as “The Haunted House”. Judge Malloch had a feud with the craftsman who supplied the stone for the construction of the building, which resulted in the latter placing a Scottish Curse on the house which would last “until the building was put to the public good.”
Following the First World War, the Town sought a suitable memorial to commemorate the service and sacrifice of the men and women of Perth, and Victoria Hall was purchased to become its first hospital, thereby dedicating the building “to the public good”. On Armistice Day in 1924 the new twenty-bed hospital was dedicated, and named The Great War Memorial Hospital of Perth and District.
The Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital was incorporated on 31 March 1995 following the amalgamation of the Smiths Falls Community Hospital and the Great War Memorial Hospital.
