World War 1 German Trench Mortar

Pelham, Ontario
Type
Other

The mortar was awarded to the Township of Pelham in 1921 by the Government of Canada and placed next to the Pelhman Cenotaph. It, was one of 101 trench mortars brought to Canada and is one of few that was not melted for Second World War efforts.

After 95 years, the mortar deteriorated and there was talk of removing it and replacing it with an artifact from the Second World War or the Korean War. A group of dedicated citizens and representatives came together to work with the Town and Council to help restore the historic monument. A plaque was added explaining the significance of the mortar and the newly restored mortar was dedicated on Saturday, September 10, 2016.
