CANADIAN PARTICIPATION
IN THE ROYAL FLYING CORPS

More than 22,000 Canadians joined the
British flying services during the First
World War, many of them drawn to the
Royal Flying Corps (RFC) by patriotism,
the hope for adventure, or the romance
of flight. They made a significant
contribution to the war effort and many
lost their lives in combat or accidents. In
1917-1918, the RFC ran a training program
in Canada, where the construction of
large-scale aerodromes and hundreds of
aircraft signalled the beginning of the air
age. After the war, veteran airmen found
employment at fledgling airlines or joined
the Royal Canadian Air Force following its
establishment in 1924.

Plus de 22 000 Canadiens s’enrôlent dans
les services d’aviation britanniques pendant
la Première Guerre mondiale. Plusieurs
sont attirés par le Royal Flying Corps
(RFC) par patriotisme, esprit d’aventure
ou une notion romantique de l’aviation.
Contribuant largement à l’effort de guerre,
beaucoup meurent au combat ou dans des
accidents. De 1917 à 1918, le RFC mène un
programme d’entraînement au pays où
la construction de grand aerodromes et de
centaines d’avions marque le début de l’ère
de l’aviation. Après la guerre, des veterans
travaillent pour des companies aériennes
ou s’engagent dans l’Aviation royale
canadienne, fondée en 1924.
