This memorial plaque is a tribute to the Battle Honour “English Channel” awarded to HMC Ships that participated in operations in the English Channel.

This plaque is one of 39 plaques unveiled in 2009 at Hylands Golf Club. The plaques commemorate former Ottawa-area military installations, a military patron saint, battle honours, ships, units, and squadrons.

This battle honour was awarded to HMC Ships that participated in operations to clear the English Channel of enemy shipping and minefields throughout the Second World War, especially during the period of 1939-1941 when conditions were extremely hazardous and the expectation of a German invasion of Britain was at its height.

Au cours de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, en particulier au cours de la période 1939 à 1941, les navires canadiens de Sa Majesté qui ont participé aux opérations pour chasser les navires ennemis de la Manche et y enlever les champs de mines, ont reçu les honneurs de guerre puisque ces opérations ont eu lieu dans des conditions extrêmement dangereuses et à un moment où on s’attendait à ce que les Allemands envahissent la Grande-Bretagne.
