This memorial plaque is dedicated to the Canadian participation in the North African campaign of the Second World War and the RCAF squadrons that were awarded the Battle Honour “North Africa”.

This plaque is one of 39 plaques unveiled in 2009 at Hylands Golf Club. The plaques commemorate former Ottawa-area military installations, a military patron saint, battle honours, ships, units, and squadrons.

North Africa – Afrique du Nord

Awarded to RCAF squadrons for operations in connection with the campaign in North Africa. 417 Squadron, equipped with Hurricane and Spitfire aircraft, spent five months in the defence of the Suez Canal and Nile Delta. In April 1943, it became the only Canadian squadron in the Desert Air Force and it provided close support and air defence to the British Eighth Army through the closing stages of the Tunisian campaign.

Attribué aux escadrons de l’ARC à la suite des opérations en lien avec la campagne de l’Afrique du Nord. Le 417e Escadron, équipé d’aéronefs Hurricane et Spitfire, a consacré cinq mois à la défense du canal de Suez et du delta du Nil. En avril 1943, il est devenu le seul escadron canadien du Desert Air Force. De plus, il a apporté un appui rapproché et une défense antiaérienne à la 8e Armée de la Grande-Bretagne au cours des dernières batailles de la campagne de Tunisie.
