This memorial is dedicated to the Canadian participation in the defence of Ceylon.

This plaque is one of 39 plaques unveiled in 2009 at Hylands Golf Club. The plaques commemorate former Ottawa-area military installations, a military patron saint, battle honours, ships, units, and squadrons.

Ceylon – Ceylan

413 Squadron flew its first patrol on 31 March 1942. On 4 April 1942, a Catalina aircraft from 413 Squadron spotted and reported a large Japanese invasion force 560 km south of Ceylon; a message was sent to Ceylon warning them of the impending Japanese attack. Ceylon was alerted to the Japanese fleet in time to repulse the attack.

Le 413e Escadron a volé au cours de ses premières patrouilles le 31 mars 1942. Le 4 avril 1942, un aéronef Catalina du 413e Escadron a découvert et signalé une force d’invasion importante du Japon à 560 kilomètres au nord de Ceylan. Un message a été envoyé à Ceylan les avertissant d’une attaque japonaise imminente. Ceylan a été avertie à temps de l’arrivée de la flotte japonaise et a pu repousser l’attaque.
