At a regular meeting of the Steinbach Royal Canadian Legion Branch 190 that it was decided to erect a cenotaph at a cost of $1,155.00 plus the cost of the base. It was erected to the memory of the men and women of Steinbach and district who served their country and unveiled 16 September 1955.

Officiating at the unveiling and dedication was Premier, the Honourable Duff Roblin, 1st Vice President Provincial Command, Manitoba and North Western Ontario. In addition to local branch members, were colour parties from Provincial Command, Dominion City, Morris and Warroad (United States of America) American Legion and the Warroad (United States of America) High School Band.

The cenotaph was re-dedicated on Sunday afternoon, 6 June 2022, with an inscription honouring Canadian peacekeepers.
