Bates Avenue was named in honour of Flying Officer Arthur John “Jack” Bate. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in November of 1942 and trained through the British Commonwealth Air Training Program. In late 1943, Bate received his commission and was posted in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He left Canada to serve overseas and arrived in November of 1943.

He was reported wounded in a Winnipeg newspaper and later reported as missing in action during air operations over Germany. Bate was officially presumed dead according to the Transcona News on 8 February 1945. He was killed in action on 6 November 1944 at 21 years of age.
