This memorial is dedicated to Sir Samuel Benfield Steele, who joined the militia during the Fenian troubles in 1866, was a member of the Red River Expedition, joined the permanent force artillery in 1871, became a sergeant major in the NWMP in 1873, and attaining a commission in 1878, received his first command at Ft. Qu’Appelle in 1879. He was promoted to super-intendent in 1885 and, in 1989, helped establish Canadian authority during the Klondike Gold Rush. Col. Steele was given command of the Lord Strathcona’s Horse in the South African War, and in 1915 he commanded the second Canadian contingent to be sent overseas in the First World War.
