Battalion Park Regiments Memorial

Calgary, Alberta
Type
Other

The largest part of this memorial consists of four large sets of numbers made up of more than 20,000 stones painted white to form the numbers "51", "113", "137" and "151". These refer to the locally-raised 51st, 113th, 137th and 151st Canadian Infantry Battalions of the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. The rock formations were initially created by soldiers in camp in the area during 1915 and 1916 and were restored in September 1995 by local cadets. The two cairns bear plaques detailing the history of the memorial, the four battalions, and rock formations.

In September 1995, 104 cadets assembled at Battalion Park to pay homage to their forefathers who fought for Canada in the 1914-18 World War. They came to paint the 20,000 stones marking the battalion numbers placed on the hillside in 1915 & 16 by the young soldiers.
