This mountain was named in 1917 in honour of HMS Black Prince. HMS Black Prince was a Royal Navy cruiser which sunk in the Battle of Jutland during the First World War. Its crew of 750 were killed. HMS Black Prince was named after the eldest son of Edward III who wore black armour when he fought against the French in the Hundred Years War.
