Comrade and President Bob Pepper took on this display of framed photographs of local veterans, as a personal quest, on January 25th, 1997. He requested funds for $750.00 to cover the cost of displaying veterans’ pictures in the Legion clubroom. Comrade Gerry Whittaker was financial advisor and Comrade Don Gourlay was on the committee later when he became President. Comrade Don Gourlay and Comrade Don Westlund repaired and updated the display in 2005. On August 27, 2005 this display was incorporated into the year of the veteran celebration with each veteran’s picture blown up to poster size and each veteran’s theatre of service, service number, years in service etc, were put on each 11inches by 17inches high. Also these scanned pictures were put into a power point presentation for Remembrance Day services at the schools and at the Legion service. Comrades Heather Penson, Vimy Berry and Ted Blowers worked endlessly along with our local Computer Teq Anne Jorgensen. This project took many hours to complete and was well received by the veterans’ and their families. The veteran’s were allowed to keep each poster with additional copies made for the families. Even some families used the information on the posters to make up T-Shirts with the veteran’s service information for a keepsake. This was done in honour of local Second World War veterans who are still living or have passed away. Article from a local newspaper: The wall of fame in the Club Room at the Valleyview Memorial Hall has been well-named. This pictorial display of our beloved veterans is beautifully done. It is a fitting tribute to the men and women who put their lives on the line so we can live in freedom. Bob Pepper, president of the Royal Canadian Legion Valleyview branch #140 spearheaded this timely and time-consuming project. If you haven’t already viewed this special acknowledgement of our veterans be sure to do so. President Pepper believes the wall of fame is complete but if someone’s photo is missing please contact him.
