This mountain was named in 1918 in honour of General Jan Christian Smuts. Smuts was a General in the South African War, Prime Minister of South Africa, member of the British War Cabinet in both World Wars, founder of the League of Nations, author of the Preamble of the United Nations, President of the British Association of the Advancement of Science, founder of the modern systems theory and the person who coined the word "holism" and "holistic". He was a lawyer, soldier, politician, statesman, philosopher, scientist, expert on grasses and a man with a great love for the mountains.
