The Veterans' Mural was erected in 1998 by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 265 and is dedicated to war time Veterans. It was painted by artist Dean Lauze. The first panel represents the Canadian Army with Canadian tanks and soldiers. The third panel represents the Canadian Air Force and Navy with Canadian planes and ships.
The most unique element is the center panel. When Dean told his good friend about the mural he would be painting for the Aldergrove Legion, his friend brought Dean a special memorial picture of his uncle who died in the First World War. His uncle was surrounded with beautifully illustrated flags from Allied Forces of the First World War.
In the mural, Dean changed out some of the flags to represent the Second World War. Not all the countries could be incorporated in the design. After consulting with the legion, it was decided to show flags from Canada, USA, Great Britain, France, Belgium, Norway, Poland and the Netherlands. The fallen Veteran was replaced with a sepia toned image of Vimy Ridge and a Veteran holding hands with two of his grandchildren in front of the Canadian National Vimy Memorial. An important message at the bottom - “To all men and women who served their countries in times of war” is a blanket statement that includes all men and women, all countries (even the enemy countries of the time), and all wars.
