Enderby Drill Hall

The Enderby Drill Hall was completed in June 1914. Built with Enderby bricks on land donated by F.H. Barnes, the building cost $15,000. It was 42' x 92' with a birch floor and a single front door. There were 3 large storerooms on the main floor and 3 officers' and reading rooms in the balcony. In the basement were furnace rooms, an ammunition closet, and a rifle range. The Drill Hall was built for the C Squadron of B.C. Horse and the 172nd Battalion of the Rocky Mountain Rangers. It has been used over the years by the cadet corps of the Rocky Mountain Rangers, by badminton and basketball clubs, and by many community organizations for dinners and dances. In 1946 washrooms were installed on both floors, plus sinks with hot and cold running water. The City of Enderby purchased the building from the federal government in 1959. The kitchen facilities were completely renovated by community groups, and the interior and exterior walls were painted. In 1998, the Drill Hall Committee of the Arts Council was formed to assume responsibility for the Drill Hall. Paint was removed from the exterior of the building in July 1998. Kitchen facilities and washrooms were renovated to meet building codes and fire regulations in August 1999. The Drill Hall continues to be used by residents and community associations.
