THE BALLYGIBLIN RIOTS 1824
In 1824, fighting broke out at Morphy's Falls (Carleton Place)
between some of the district's established Protestant settlers
and a group of recently arrived Irish Catholic immigrants.
Religious animosity, aggravated by earlier settlers' jealousy
of increased assistance extended to newcomers, provided the
background for the violence, which first erupted following a
militia muster on April 23. While arresting some of the Irish,
an armed force of settlers led by the District's deputy sheriff
on Sunday, May 2 attacked Shipman's Mills (Almonte) where
the immigrants had gathered. One immigrant was killed, several
wounded and a few buildings destroyed or damaged. Peace was
restored through the efforts of a government agent, Col. James
Fitzgibbon.
