Bailey Bridging
Sir Donald C. Bailey of the Royal Engineer Experimental Bridging Establishment, designed the Bailey Bridging System in 1940. It's remarkable flexibility rendered it an important element in the success of Allied Forces During the Second World War. The Royal Engineering Unit which carried out the first operational deployment of the Bailey Bridge, in Tunisia in 1942, included RMC #2569 Capt D.H. Gibson. The Royal Canadian Engineers made extensive use of Bailey Bridging in support of the operations of the First Canadian Army in North West Europe in 1944-45.
This double single span of Bailey Bridging has been erected to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the founding of Military Engineering within the Canadian Forces and the long association of the Branch with the Royal Military College of Canada.
