The City of Ottawa erected Boteler Street dedicated to Lieutenant-Colonel Richard A. Boteler, who was commissioned into the Royal Engineers in 1804. He served in South America, Portugal, Walcheren (the Netherlands) as part of the Napoleonic Wars, Sierra Leone and England. In September 1829, he embarked for North America and served with Lieutenant-Colonel By on the Rideau Canal until 1831 when he was appointed Engineer Commander of Halifax. In 1834, he embarked on the vessel Calypso, but the ship foundered on route to England and Lieutenant-Colonel Boteler was lost at sea.
