Gleichen Cenotaph

Gleichen, Alberta
Type
Other

This memorial was donated by the community of Gleichen and unveiled November 10, 1920. It was built by an Alberta firm from 25.4 tons of British Columbia grey granite. The appearance of the monument is rugged to harmonize with the pioneer days of the country and of the men who served.

The cenotaph displays three large bronze plaques situated on three sides of the monument that list the 235 local men who enlisted for service. At the top of the monument there is an additional granite structure with a brass plaque containing an honour roll consisting of 51 names of men who gave their lives in the First World War. Immediately below this structure is a band that contains the names of the battles and places that these men lost their lives. The cenotaph was paid for through subscriptions sold to members in the Gleichen Community and surrounding area.

Since the original unveiling, additions were made to honour those who served in the Second World War, Korean War and Afghanistan.
