This memorial was unveiled on Decoration Day in 1922 by Major General Panet, a Veteran of the South African War and the First World War. He commanded the Artillery of the 2nd Division and was the District Commander at the time of the unveiling. Also present was G. Arthur Welstead, the Reeve of the Township and Warden for Lincoln County. There was a large gathering of about 1,000 people.
The memorial was originally dedicated to the citizens of the Township of Grantham who were killed in the First World War. A plaque for the Second World War was unveiled on June 7, 1954. Plaques were later added for the Korean War and Afghanistan. In 1961 Grantham Township was amalgamated into the city of St. Catherines.
