Three murals were commissioned and painted by local artist Commander Donald Cameron MacKay, R.C.N. in 1951. Mr. Mackay was the principal at the Nova Scotia College of Art and served in the Royal Canadian Navy for part of his six years as a war artist.

The murals depict the role of the servicemen during the war years. The murals are based on his sketches of Halifax dockyard scenes, the harbour, ships and local military installations. The murals are approximately 6 feet long. They were exhibited in the Halifax Memorial Library Building for many years until they were donated to the Maritime Command Museum (CFB Halifax) in 1974.

The Maritime Command Museum was established at Admiralty House to preserve the Military heritage of Canada's Maritime Forces. It is the largest Naval Museum within the system. The Museum was officially opened on March 26, 1974 by Rear Admiral D. S. Boyle.
