Remembrance Day – Jour du Souvenir

The first Remembrance Day, held in 1919 throughout the Commonwealth, was originally called Armistice Day. The day commemorated the end of the First World War on Monday 11 November 1918 at 11 A.M.; the 11^th hour of the 11^th day of the 11^th month.

They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them. Refrain: We will remember them.

Le premier Jour de Souvenir a eu lieu en 1919 partout dans les pays du Commonwealth. On l’a d’abord appelé Journée de l’Armistice. Cette journée rappelait la fin de la Première Guerre mondiales qui avait été signée le lundi 11 novembre 1918 à 11h du matin : la 11^e heure du 11^e jour du 11^e mois.

Ils ne vieilliront pas comme nous qui leurs avons survécu. Ils ne connaîtront jamais l’outrage ni le poids des années. Quand viendra l’heure du crépuscule et celle de l’aurore, nous nous souviendrons d’eux. Refrain : Nous nous souviendrons d’eux.
