Royal Canadian Regiment Gate

Halifax, Nova Scotia

Other

The Royal Canadian Regiment (RCR) was organized in 1883 to train the Canadian militia. It served the British Army garrison in Halifax during the 19th century to defend the city and naval dockyard from land and sea attack.

Wellington Barracks included officers quarters and soldiers quarters. Both structures were damaged during the 1917 Halifax Explosion, with the officers quarters requiring extensive repairs. The RCR Gate was the original entrance to the quarters.

The Wellington Barracks property was turned over to the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War and commissioned HMCS Stadacona. A regimental banner and cap badge are over the gates, and the emblazoned battle honours of the Regiment on the stone Gate posts. The regimental cypher decorates two pedestrian doors flanking the main gate.
