The Scheldt – l’Escaut

In October 1944, the Canadian Army struggled to open the vital port of Antwerp, for use by allied convoys. The Germans were determined to defend it. Canadians fought in appaling conditions over flooded ground to capture the approached to Antwerp and clear the southern bank of the Scheldt. By 28 November 1944, the Scheldt was clear and the first allied convoys disembarked at Antwerp.
