This memorial is dedicated to the 1st Canadian Division participation in the Second Battle of Ypres.

This plaque is one of 39 plaques unveiled in 2009 at Hylands Golf Club. The plaques commemorate former Ottawa-area military installations, a military patron saint, battle honours, ships, units, and squadrons.

In April 1915, the 1st Canadian Division fought the grim Second Battle of Ypres, in Belgium, during which the Germans introduced poison gas to the Western Front. The Canadians fought bravely despite being violently ill from gas and their courage and ability in the face of this new weapon of war won them recognition as first class troops.

En avril 1915, la 1e Division canadienne a combattu lors de la deuxième bataille d’Ypres, en Belgique, au cours de laquelle les Allemands ont introduit les gaz toxiques au Front Ouest. Les Canadiens ont combattu bien que les gaz les aient rendus malades. Leur courage et leurs capacités face à cette nouvelle arme de guerre leur ont valu d’être reconnus comme étant une force de combat d’élite.
