This island is named in honour and memory of William McGill Stewart, one of our honoured dead of World War II. Service No. C-86790. Worked with the barge transport on Lac Seul. Died in the service and defence of his country while with the Royal Canadian Air Force over Aachen, Germany, May 23, 1944.

The cairn was erected by the volunteers of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 139 and the Members of the Lac Seul Native Band Reserve No. 28.
