In 1946, Gordon MacPherson and William Lett, two First World War Veterans, initiated a memorial project in the Strongfield community and formed a committee named the "Strongfield War Services Association." The Cenotaph was unveiled and dedicated on Decoration Day August 3, 1947.
Fred Clarke, a welder and welding instructor, was asked to build the soldier for the top of the memorial, and the community recruited volunteers to construct the base of concrete. Fred Clarke and his students at Moose Jaw Technical High School constructed the life-sized statue of a soldier leaning upon his rifle. Clarke was an award winning artist of national significance who was renowned for his attention to detail and his realistic portrayals. The sculpture is one of Clarke’s largest works.
The cenotaph's concrete base was covered with steel and painted in 1989 and again in October 2000. All work to keep the cenotaph in good condition is done by community volunteers.
