On September 16, 1919, the Methodist Board of Education decided to build a memorial school under the leadership of Rev. Walter W. Cotton. The foundation was laid October 4 and on June 30, 1923, Elliston Memorial School opened to honour residents killed during the Great War. The second story was later removed and it became the United Church Hall until it was torn down in February/March of 2013 to become the site of Sealers Interpretation Centre on Main Street. The original large window from the second story has been incorporated into the interpretation centre.

The Town of New-Wes-Valley takes its name from the towns of Newtown, Wesleyville, and Valleyfield. In 2018 the Community Remembrance Committee began considering a more suitable site for the cenotaph than the land beside the fire hall. The Community Remembrance Committee (CRC) organizes the annual Remembrance Day Ceremony. The Public Works Committee had discussed development of the land beside the fire hall, consequently, the Community Remembrance Committee is looking into moving the cenotaph and the potential creation of a Remembrance Park using government funding opportunities.
