HALIFAX ARMOURY
LE MANEGE MILITAIRE D'HALIFAX

The federal government built this impressive drill hall between
1895 and 1899 as part of the reform and expansion of the
Active Militia. Planned as a fully-equipped training centre, it
was substantially larger than most earlier drill halls and boasted
such novel features as an indoor shooting gallery and lecture
rooms. The robust style, suggestive of the medieval fortress,
shows the influence of Chief Architect Thomas Fuller. Its bold
imagery and sophisticated plan perfectly captured the spirit of
militia reform and influenced Canadian drill hall design for
several decades.

Le gouvernement fédéral construisit cet imposant manège entre
1895 et 1899, durant la réforme et l'expansion de la milice
active. Conçu comme centre de formation entièrement équipé, il
était beaucoup plus grand que la plupart des salles d'exercice
antérieures et intégrait des nouveautés telles qu'un stand de tir
intérieur et des salles de cours. Son aspect solide, évoquant une
forteresse médiévale, rappelle l'oeuvre de Thomas Fuller. Son
symbolisme audacieux et son plan complexe traduisent bien
l'esprit de la réforme de la milice et ont influencé la conception
des manèges militaires canadiens pendant plusieurs décennies.

ADMIRALTY HOUSE
ÉDIFICE DE L'AMIRAUTÉ

From about 1819 until 1904 this building was the resi-
dence of the Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Navy's
North American Station. The admirals occupying this post
were senior British officials, both in North America and
in the Empire at large, their presence here contributed to
the prestige of Halifax as a naval establishment. During
the first World War the building served as a hospital, and
it later became an officers' mess. A large residence for the
period, it reflects the status of its original occupants and
survives as a good example of British classicism in Canada.

Vers 1819 et jusqu'a 1904, ce bâtiment servit de résidence
au commandant en chef de la Marine royale en Amérique du
Nord. Les amiraux nommés à ce poste étaient des fonc-
tionnaires britanniques importants, tant en Amérique du
Nord que dans tout l'Empire et leur présence à Halifax
rehaussait le prestige de cette ville portuaire. Transformé
en hôpital pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, il devint plus
tard le mess des officiers. Le bâtiment, très grand pour
l'époque, reflete le statut de ses premiers occupants et cons-
titue un bel exemple du classicisme britannique au Canada.
