According to St. John's Presbyterian Church minute books, on July 8, 1919, "It was moved that the church set up a committee to consider the erection of a memorial for the soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice." On January 13, 1920, a vote was taken and there was unanimous support in favour of a monument. Seven members were appointed to solicit funds for the monument. It took five years to collect enough money and the bill was paid in full on June 28, 1925.

The contractor for the monument was H. M. Chandler. The monument was likely constructed before final payment in June 1925, but the exact year is unknown.

Erected by the town of Georgetown, this memorial is dedicated to the local veterans of the First and Second World War. In 1970 the first Memorial was replaced with a grey granite Monument. This Monument was constructed in memory of the Native Sons who Paid the Supreme Sacrifice in the First World War (1914-1918) and the Second World War (1939-1945). The 1999 the original brass plaque was refurbished and is now mounted in the Kings Playhouse, Georgetown. The brass plaque was rededicated on November 11, 1999, Remembrance Day, and unveiled again to the public by the Honourable Lawrance MacAulay, Solicitor General of Canada and His Worship Mayor Mark Gotell of the town of Georgetown.
