Qu’Appelle in 1879. He was promoted to super-intendent in 1885 and, in 1989, helped establish Canadian authority during the Klondike Gold Rush. Col. Steele was given command of the Lord Strathcona’s Horse in the South African War, and in 1915 he commanded the second Canadian contingent to be sent overseas in the First World War.
