Currie Bay is named in honour of David Vivian Currie, V.C.-- the only Saskatchewan native to win the Victoria Cross. His bravery resulted in the cutting off of one of the primary escape routes in Normandy during the Second World War.

Caen, France, was occupied by the Germans from 1940-1944. Troops of the Regina Rifles assisted in its liberation in their bloodiest fighting since landing at Normandy. Three quarters of Caen was destroyed by bombs and artillery fire.

NO. 3 AIR OBSERVERS SCHOOL
THESE TWO UNITS WERE BASED HERE DURING 1940 TO 1945 OPERATING
UNDER THE BRITISH COMMONWEALTH AIR TRAINING PLAN. AIRCREW TRAINED
HERE WERE PART OF THE 131,500 AIRCREW TRAINED IN CANADA FOR THE FIGHT
AGAINST TYRANNY. SOME 40,000 OF WHOM GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE DEFENCE
OF FREEDOM. THIS CAIRN RECOGNIZES THOSE WHO TRAINED HERE DURING
WORLD WAR II.

The Regina Airmen Memorial was dedicated 5 June 1993, in memory of those Airmen trained under the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. The cost of the Cairn and the Plaque was covered by No. 600 (Regina) Wing, Air Force Association of Canada. This Cairn is the first of a series of BCATP Memorials erected by No. 600 (Regina) Wing, Air Force Association of Canada. Present at the Ceremony were members of the Saskatchewan Legislature, representatives of Transport Canada, Col. Hunter of 15 Wing Moose Jaw and members of No. 600 (Regina) Wing, Air Force Association of Canada. The Cairn is located in a small park area northwest of the Terminal building at the Regina Airport.
