On September 1, 1939 the District Officer Commanding Military District #10 issued instructions to the Commanding Officer, the Fort Garry
Horse, that mobilization procedures were to be initiated immediately. Officers of the Regiment were notified that recruiting would commence at
Minto Armouries, Winnipeg, at 1300 hours on September 20, 1939. The Fort Garry Horse has the honour of being the first complete Canadian
Cavalry Regiment in Canada to be called to active service for the Second World War.

The Fort Garry Horse trained at Minto Armouries and Camp Shilo, Manitoba, before proceeding to Camp Borden, Ontario on September 1, 1940.
The Regiment embarked for the United Kingdom on November 10, 1941, and after a period of intense training, took part in the assault on the
beaches of Normandy, France on D.Day, June 6, 1944. The Garry’s on various occasions saw action with the 2nd and 3rd Canadian Infantry Divisions,
the British 50th Northumberland Div. And the Royal Marine Commandos and the 101st US Airborne Div. The Fort Garry Horse served with
distinction through France, Belgium, Holland and Germany, on May 5, 1945 after exactly eleven
months of combat.

Following the cessation of hostilities in Europe on May 8, 1945, the Regiment was stationed at Doetinchem, Holland, until repatriated to Canada
on Nov. 30 1945. The Fort Garry Horse returned to Winnipeg and the Active Force Regiment was disbanded at Minto Armouries
effective January 31, 1946.

Erected by the Fort Garry Horse Association on the occasion of the 75th Anniversary of the Regiment (1912-
1987). Dedicated in honor of those who served and in memory of all Garrys who made the supreme sacrifice.

The stained glass window which dominates the transept shows scenes from every war which has involved people from Manitoba – from Batoche to the Boer War, the First and Second World Wars, and Korean War. Designed by Western Art Glass of Winnipeg, it was dedicated on October 19, 1975, to the Glory of God and in tribute to the armed forces of the Winnipeg Command.

The window was erected by past and present members of the Fort Garry Horse and The Royal Winnipeg Rifles, and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 84 and their Ladies Auxiliary. Even though the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry is not mentioned in the inscription, their regimental badge is incorporated in the center pane.

The cathedral is the regimental church of The Royal Winnipeg Rifles (Little Black Devils) and the regiment’s drum and bugle is housed in a cabinet in the transept.

In February 1946, a group of people (representing more than two dozen community organizations) came together under the chairmanship of Louis G. Howard to form the Selkirk and District Memorial Committee. On the evening of January 17, 1952, Memorial Hall was officially opened and dedicated to the men and women who gave their lives in the Boer War, First World War and Second World War.

The chapel was dedicated the same night, after wreaths had been laid by the city and Veterans’ organizations. Rev. R. N. R. Holmes, an active navy chaplain during the Second World War, performed the blessing. Items in the small chapel include a Book of Remembrance containing the names of those who died, a stained-glass window, and the bell from HMCS Daerwood. More recently, it became home to the 108 Battalion War Memorial bronze tablet.

Louis G. Howard presented the keys for the Memorial Hall to Mayor Steve Oliver on January 28, 1952. Howard’s committee work did not end there, as it still had a $10,000 debt. A new fundraising campaign began in February 1952, which took more than a year to complete.

Mike Port was commissioned to paint the '2005: Year of the Veteran' by the Royal Canadian Legion in Selkirk. The mural contains three elements: the Army Navy and Air Force. Since it represents Canada it features the Canadian Corvette. The airplanes featured are the Hurricane, Lancaster and Spitfire. In the centre there is a black-white photo. The ship, the men and the planes are all facing one way or one direction- to illustrate the commitment of the Canadians, and their unified purpose. The military service members are framed by putting a circle around them to add emphasis and focus. The personnel and their sacrifice is shown as more important than the machines of war that they used.

2nd Lieutenant Alan Arnett McLeod, VC, citation from The London Gazette, dated May 1, 1918.

"While flying with his observer, Lieutenant A. W. Hammond, M.C., attacking hostile formations by bombs and machine gun fire, he was assailed at a height of 5,000 feet by eight enemy triplanes which dived at him from all directions, firing from their front guns. By skilful manoeuvring he enabled his observer to fire bursts at each machine in turn, shooting three of them down out of control. By this time Lieutenant McLeod had received five wounds, and while continuing the engagement a bullet penetrated his petrol tank and set the machine on fire.

He then climbed out on to the left bottom plane, controlling his machine from the side of the fusilage, and by sideslipping steeply kept the flames to one side, thus enabling the observer to continue firing until the ground was reached.

The observer had been wounded six times when the machine crashed in "No Man's Land" and 2nd Lieutenant McLeod, notwithstanding his own wounds, dragged him away from the burning wreckage at great personal risk from heavy machine-gun fire from the enemy's lines. This very gallant pilot was again wounded by a bomb whilst engaged in this act of rescue, but he persevered until he had placed Lieutenant Hammond in comparative safety, before falling himself from exhaustion and loss of blood."

This road is named in honour of 2nd Lieutenant Alan Arnett McLeod, VC.

The youngest Canadian to earn the Victoria Cross, Alan Arnett McLeod, was awarded the VC at the age of 18. Alan was born in Stonewall, Manitoba on April 20, 1899. He showed an early affinity for the military and in 1913, although 4 years under age, he joined the 34th Fort Garry Horse for summer training. When the First World War started, he tried to enlist several times and was rejected each time because he was underage. Finally in 1917, just days after his 18th birthday, he entered the Royal Flying Corps in Toronto. By August, he was sent overseas to England and by the end of the year; he was flying missions over France. On March 27, 1918, Alan & his gunner Lt. A.W. Hammond, M.C. were on a mission when they were attacked by 8 German triplanes. During the ensuing gunfight, both McLeod and Hammond were wounded several times. A bullet struck their gas tank and their plane caught fire. McLeod climbed out on the wing and continued to fly the plane while Hammond continued to fire at the enemy planes. They managed to shoot down three enemy planes before they crashed in “No Man’s Land”. Alan McLeod was wounded again as he dragged Hammond to safety. He received his VC on September 4, 1918, and returned to Manitoba to recover from his wounds, but contracted influenza and died November 6, 1918.
