Charles Piault came to Canada as a young man from France in 1910 and chose Oak Lake District as his field of work and learning. He graduated from Oakwood High School with the highest honor of the Governor General's medal. Following the declaration of war in 1914, he enlisted and was killed in action in France, August 18, 1918.

In his will he left a legacy to Oakwood School. Donations were added by citizens of Oak Lake, Sifton and Woodworth to the amount of $2000 establishing the Oakwood Memorial Scholarship. The purpose was to keep the memory of the men and boys of this district who gave their lives in the First World War. A required Act was passed by the province regarding administration of the scholarship. There is no written record of scholarship awards until 1930-31 and the scholarship continues to be awarded each year.

Spearheaded by the Great War Veterans Association, pressure was exerted upon the Town and Municipality, beginning in 1919, for the establishment of a suitable memorial for the community. A Citizens’ Memorial Committee was formed in June 1920 to choose the type of memorial and raise funds for its construction. Chaired by W.V. Udall, editor of the Boissevain Recorder, the committee chose the present cenotaph in the hospital grounds, although a considerable number of people were in favour of a memorial hall.

During 1922 - 23, funds were raised by public subscription and the cenotaph was ordered from Sutherland Co. in Brandon at a cost of $4,000. It is made of British Columbia granite and the statue of Italian marble was carved in Italy. Names were engraved on the base of the statue in early 1924 and it was unveiled on Main Street in July of 1924. It was facing south on the street right-of-way, which is now a park area west of MacLeods Store.

The statue's gaze is nearly straight ahead with arms and hands holding the rifle in a less relaxed manner. The uniform, cap and equipment are expertly carved.

Some years later, the property caused some concern as to legal ownership and the Government of Manitoba arranged to transfer a twenty foot square in perpetuity to the Town of Boissevain. As far as it is known, this property still remains legal cenotaph area although the cenotaph was removed from the site in 1947 and transferred, at a cost of $2,000 to the present site within the Memorial Hospital grounds. At this time the names of those who died in the Second World War were added at the base of the cenotaph.

The Canoe River Memorial was erected by the 2nd Regiment, Royal Canadian Horse Artillery, and is dedicated to the seventeen soldiers of the regiment killed in a train accident on the way from Shilo to Fort Lewis, Washington, on November 21, 1950. A sundial is placed in the top of the cairn.

A 17-car train filled with 23 officers and 315 men of the 2nd Regiment of the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery headed from the Prairies to the coast to embark for Korea. At mid-morning, they approached Canoe River and began a long, winding curve ascent. From the opposite direction, the 11-car Vancouver-Montreal passenger train entered the same loop on a descent.

The locomotives met head-on. The forward cars of the military train were thrown down an embankment and demolished . In just seconds, 17 of the Canadian Contingent to Korea, one as young as 17, most of them in their early 20s, were dead or dying and 60 more injured. Four soldiers' bodies were never recovered.

The four CN Rail crew members were also killed and there were many injured gunners (33 non-walking and nine walking). There were no casualties to passengers on the East bound train.

This memorial was erected in 1924 and dedicated to the local war dead of the First World War. When it was first installed, only the center inscription exisited. Inscriptions to honour Veterans of the Second World War, Korean War, peacekeepers and Afghanistan were added later.

The Cross of Sacrifice, designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield in 1918, is one of two iconic features designed by Commonwealth War Graves Commission architects. Crosses of Sacrifice are found around the world in Commission cemeteries and in public cemeteries. The Cross of Sacrifice is an imposing bronze medieval longsword, blade down, on a stark white cross. It is one of the most enduring symbols of the bravery and sacrifice made by the men and women of the Commonwealth during the World Wars.
