Personal information correction requests

Understanding your rights

You have the right to ask for a correction to your personal information if you believe there is an error or something is missing. This right is provided under Subsection 12(2) of the Privacy Act and Subsection 11(1) of the Privacy Regulations.

  • You can request corrections to basic personal details like your date of birth, address, or phone number, and other factual information.
  • Medical opinions cannot be corrected, as they are considered professional assessments rather than factual errors.
  • In some cases, you may be asked to provide documents or proof before a correction is made.

If you are not satisfied with how your correction request is handled, you have the right to file a complaint with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada

Correction request outcomes

Once your correction request is received, you will get a written response within 30 days. The response will tell you whether your request has been approved or denied.

  • If your correction is approved:

    Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) will:

    • Update your personal information as requested.
    • Notify anyone (individuals or organizations) who received your personal information in the past two years about the correction.
    • Inform other government departments that received your personal information in the past two years, so they can also update their records.
  • If your correction is denied:

    VAC will:

    • Add a note to your file indicating that a correction was requested but not made. This ensures that anyone reviewing your file is aware of your request.
    • Notify anyone (individuals, organizations, or government departments) who received your personal information that a correction was requested but not made.
