Son of George Leonard and the late Margaret Smith of Ireland. Husband of Dorothy (née Pretoria) Smith, father of Albert Patrick, John, Stanley Edward, David, and Richard Henry of North Bay, Ontario. Brother of Charlotte.

Engine Room Artificer 3rd Class Smith enlisted on 12 February 1941 in Ottawa, Ontario. He served in Canada and on the High Seas. He had previous service with the Royal Navy and Royal Auxillary Navy from 1909 to 1921.
