Son of Cyrys George Edward and Janet Lockhead, of Ottawa, Ontario.

On 19 August 1940, the Ville de Gand was making an unescorted crossing from Liverpool, England, to New York, USA, when it was torpedoed by U-48 200 miles (322 km) west of Ireland. She sank in less than two minutes after receiving the coup de grâce at 1.09 am, position 55°28'N/15°10'W. The captain and 14 crew members lost their lives. There were 40 survivors.
