Son of Thomas Alfred Smith and Euphemia Cochrane, of Clayton, Ontario. Thomas Alfred is a First World War veteran, he served in France with the 3rd (Canadian) Siege Battery, service number 303067.
Brother of William Thomas Smith, service number C-103004, 2nd Company 3rd Platoon, Canadian Field Artillery and brother of Robert John Smith, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, based in Fredericton, New Brunswick; they survived the war.
He served in Ontario, in New Brunswick, in Newfoundland with Force W, in Québec, in Hong Kong with Force C and in Japan as prisoner of war. He had 1,231 days of service, including 773 overseas.

YOKOHAMA WAR CEMETERY Japan
YOKOHAMA WAR CEMETERY is 9 kilometres west of the city on Yuenchi-Dori, Hodogaya Ward, which branches left off the old Tokkaido highway. The nearest railway station is Hodogaya, 5 kilometres to the north on the JNR line but the cemetery is easily reached by bus from Yokohama station.
