Son of Elzear (Harry) and Elizabeth (née Pelletier) Ross, of Hubbard, Saskatchewan. Husband of Marie Flora (née Bellegarde) Ross of Lorlie, Saskatchewan.

Father of J. Peter, Gunner J. Edmund, Cecil, Marie E. and Elizabeth K. Ross, both of whom served in the Women's Division of the Royal Canadian Air Force.

Pte Ross served in the First World War attached to the 1st Depot Battalion. He was then transferred to the 5th Battalion on 12 February 1918. He served in England and France. He was honourably discharged on 12 April 1919 in Regina, Saskatchewan.

Pte Ross enjoyed playing cards and lived on a small farm which he rented. The Province of Saskatchewan named Ross Lake in his honour.
