Son of James Law Hutchinson and Annie S. McDougall of Rexton, Kent, New Brunswick. Husband of Olive May Galloway of Toxteth Park, Lancashire, England. Father of two children, including Eric Edmound Hutchinson.

During the First World War, he served in the Royal Navy as a temporary captain from 18 May 1917 to 1919. He died on 1 November 1943 of angina pectoris in St. John's, Newfoundland, while his ship was docked there.
