Helicopter – United States Coast Guard helicopter #1363, a Sikorsky HH-52A Seaguard, shown here taxiing on water. This specific, individual helicopter(USCG #1363) was the one in which Sub-Lt. Alltree was killed on 22 December 1964 when, in bad weather and poor visibility, it crashed into rising terrain on the coast of northern California, near Trinidad. At the time, the aircraft was engaged in rescue and evacuation operations in a region of extensive flooding caused by a severe “storm of the century”; the crew had already saved ten people that day. In addition to Sub-Lt. Alltree (co-pilot), six others were killed in the crash: Lieutenant-Commander Donald Price, USCG (pilot) and Aviation Electronics Technician 2nd Class James A. Nininger Jr., USCG (crewman); Bud Hansen, a local farmer acting as a volunteer spotter and guide; and three evacuees, Marie Bahnsen, Bette Kempf and her infant daughter Melanie Kempf.
