The Korean Veterans Cairn was dedicated on September 13, 1998, and honours those from Manitoba who lost their lives during the Korean War, 1950-1953, or in Korea on peacekeeping duties from 1953-1955. It also honours the 17 Gunners from Camp Shilo who lost their lives when their troop train crashed at Canoe River, British Columbia.
The land was donated by the City of Winnipeg. The cairn was made possible through the efforts of Manitoba Keystone Unit 17, Korea Veterans Association of Canada. Raising money for the project was handled by a committee. All levels of government assisted in funding a percentage of the cost.
The cairn was fabricated and erected by Larsen’s Memorials of Winnipeg. It is made of Canadian grey granite, matching the individual memorials of Korean War Veterans who rest in the Field of Honour, Brookside Cemetery.
