The Southampton Cenotaph was erected in 1958 by the Royal Canadian Legion, Southampton Branch to honour the men who gave their lives in both World Wars. The official unveiling of the ceremony took place on July 5, 1958, during Southampton’s 1958 Centennial celebration, with Veterans and Colour Guard in attendance, and was witnessed by several hundred people.
It features two bronze plaques, one for each of the World Wars, with the names of local Southampton and nearby Saugeen First Nation men who laid down their lives. The bronze plaques were produced in North Bay at Rhan Metals, now known as Rhan Plastics. The First World War plaque was previously located at the Town Hall Tower where it was unveiled with the Memorial Clock in 1922. A large cross was later added behind the cenotaph.
