This monument is dedicated to the bravery, determination and courage of the crew of the HMCS Valleyfield which sunk in 1944. The monument was inaugurated on May 7, 2000. A grey-coloured anchor from the destroyer HMCS Gatineau, with some of its chains, is the centerpiece of the monument. A description of the monument is engraved in both official languages on an aluminium plaque at the cement base of the monument. The monument was created together with the City of Valleyfield and the anchor was donated by the Government of Canada. The monument project was submitted by Lieutenant (Navy) Pierre Lefebvre, CD and inaugurated in the presence of survivors of HMCS Valleyfield and a member of U548, as well as various local dignitaries and other officials.
