Q1. What is therapist-assisted, internet-based cognitive behavioural therapy?

Therapist-assisted, internet-based cognitive behavioural therapy is a structured therapy program that you access online. These programs often include 'homework' or 'assignments' that you can complete on your own time between sessions. This type of therapy gives you access to regular support, helps you monitor your symptoms, and offers feedback on your assignments from a regulated mental health provider.

Q2. How do I know if a certain program is covered?

Online programs must be registered with Medavie Blue Cross. If you’re unsure whether the program or provider is covered, call Medavie Blue Cross at 1-888-261-4033.

Q3. Who qualifies for this coverage?

You may qualify to have the cost of online cognitive behavioural therapy reimbursed if:

  • you received a disability benefit from VAC for certain mental health conditions, and
  • qualify for coverage under the Treatment Benefits Program.

Note: You must get preauthorization to receive this benefit.

If you have questions about your coverage, or preauthorization, please call Medavie Blue Cross at 1-888-261-4033.

Q4. Do I need a prescription for coverage of this benefit?

No, you do not need a prescription or referral from a medical doctor. You may qualify for coverage as long as you qualify for the Treatment Benefits program and have an approved disability benefit for certain mental health conditions, such as anxiety or depressive disorders, including phobias.

Q5. Do I need preauthorization from VAC or Medavie Blue Cross to receive coverage?

Yes, preauthorization is required. We recommend contacting Medavie Blue Cross at 1-888-261-4033 to discuss program and provider details.

Q6. Do family members qualify for this coverage?

Family members do not qualify for this coverage. They must access their provincial or private health care coverage. For information regarding supports that are available for your family members, visit the VAC website, Support for families and caregivers.

Q7. How does a program or service provider register with Medavie Blue Cross?

Providers can call Medavie Blue Cross at 1-888-261-4033 or register online. Medavie Blue Cross will review their health professional credentials or program details against the criteria put in place by VAC.

If approved, Medavie Blue Cross gives providers information on how to register to the provider portal, sign up for direct deposit, view provider guides and benefit grids, and more.
