John (Jack) Abernethy Poolton was born in Toronto, Ontario on January 9, 1918. He was one of seven children. His father farmed 100 acres near Kapuskasing, Ontario. Mr. Poolton enlisted in the Royal Regiment of Canada and provides vivid, clear details of the allied landing at Dieppe, France on August 19, 1942.

The summer of 1939, I decided, well there was three or four guys that we decided together. This one night we heard the news that Canada declared war. I tell ya, it sent a funny feeling through you, you know. Because, as I said, we’d heard, we’d listen as kids to my dad talking to other Veterans or maybe they weren’t war Veterans maybe they were, you know, it could be anybody, there was nothing else to do in them days. You know, about the gas and the mustard gas and the all this stuff, you know, and machine guns and so when the word came out, it was bad enough when Britain declared but then again when you heard the news that Canada, we were at war, you know, we were at war again, twenty five years later.
