By 1921, the Community Memorial Association was endeavouring to erect a war memorial in the Village. They arranged fundraising events and received a grant from the East Zorra Township Council. The monument was erected by contractor, Dan Miller of Woodstock, and officially unveiled September 13, 1925.
The monument consists of a cross of Stanstead grey granite rock, which is fifteen feet high and seven feet wide at the base. The inscription at the bottom of the base which reads “They Fell Where The Fighting Was Fiercest” is an extract from a letter received from Mrs. Mike Callan, telling of the death of her son, Private Frank H. Callan, of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry.
Originally a monument honouring the First World War, additional names were added to commemorate the five from the area who gave their lives in the Second World War.
